The Arts are modes of expression that use skill or imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments or experiences that can be shared with others according to Britannica.
Within the arts, there are a variety of categories including literature (poetry, manuscripts, short stories, drama, etc.), the visual arts (painting, drawing, sketching, coloring, sculpture, etc.), the graphic arts (design), the plastic arts (sculpture and modeling), the decorative arts (furniture design, home design, style), the performing arts (theater, dance, music) and architecture (often including interior design).
There are numerous benefits to artistic expression:
- Art stimulates the imagination - Art is a process of learning to create ourselves and experience the world in new ways. It opens the heart and mind to numerous possibilities.
- Art makes you more observant - Creating art helps you learn to “see” by concentrating on detail and paying more attention to your environment.
- Art helps problem-solving skills - Art challenges our beliefs and encourages open-ended thinking. Making art teaches that there is more than one solution to the same problem.
- Art boosts self-esteem and sense of accomplishment - Seeing your own or your child’s latest work of art on a wall or shelf or in the world can instill confidence and belief in your uniqueness.
- Art reduces stress - Art is a relaxing hobby that can lower your stress levels and lead to an overall improvement in well-being. Creating art can take your mind off life’s many stresses.
Crafting using one's hands has been practiced for millennia and continues to thrive today with various types of crafts. Here are some of the more popular craft hobbies and careers people enjoy:
- Basket Weaving - The process of weaving or sewing pliable materials into three-dimensional artifacts, such as baskets, mats, mesh bags or even furniture.
- Candle Making - While candles add warmth and light to every space, making your home feel cozier, they don't last forever and can be a little pricey so many people make their own.
- Ceramics - A ceramic is any of the various hard, brittle, heat-resistant materials made by shaping and then firing an inorganic, nonmetallic material, such as clay at a high temperature.
- Crochet - A process of creating textiles by using a crochet hook to interlock loops of yarn, thread or strands of other materials. The name is derived from the French term crochet, meaning 'small hook'.
- Decoupage - The art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf and other decorative elements.
- Doll Making - Traditional dolls made of materials such as clay and wood are found in the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. Many modern dolls are made with cotton, linen, flannel and lightweight denims for clothing.
- Embroidery - The craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as pearls, beads, quills and sequins.
- Knitting - A method by which yarn is manipulated to create a textile or fabric. It is used to create many types of garments. Knitting may be done by hand or by machine.
- Leatherwork - The practice of making leather into craft objects or works of art, using shaping techniques, coloring techniques or both.
- Macrame - A form of textile produced using knotting rather than weaving or knitting techniques. The primary knots of macramé are the square and forms of hitching.
- Miniature Models - A physical model which is geometrically similar to an object. Scale models are generally smaller than large prototypes such as vehicles, buildings, or people; but may be larger than small prototypes such as anatomical structures or subatomic particles.
- Beaded Jewelry - Handmade jewelry and handicrafts are a part of culture in many parts of the world. Handmade jewelry can be made using any materials and techniques provided they are manually done.
- Mosaics - A pattern or image made of small regular or irregular pieces of colored stone, glass or ceramic, held in place by plaster/mortar, and covering a surface.
- Origami - The art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture. In modern usage, the word "origami" is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin.
- Papermaking - Papermaking, regardless of the scale on which it is done, involves making a dilute suspension of fibers in water, called "furnish", and forcing this suspension to drain through a screen, to produce a mat of interwoven fibers.
- Printmaking - The process of creating artworks by printing, normally on paper, but also on fabric, wood, metal and other surfaces. "Traditional printmaking" normally covers only the process of creating prints using a hand processed technique, rather than a photographic reproduction of a visual artwork.
- Quilting - The term given to the process of joining a minimum of three layers of fabric together either through stitching manually using a needle and thread or mechanically with a sewing machine.
- Soap Making - A variety of methods are available for hobbyists to make soap. Most soapmakers use processes where the glycerol remains in the product, and the saponification continues for many days after the soap is poured into molds.
- Stained Glass - As a material stained glass is glass that has been coloured by adding metallic salts during its manufacture, and usually then further decorating it in various ways. The colored glass is crafted into stained glass windows in which small pieces of glass are arranged to form patterns or pictures.
- Weaving - A method of textile production in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. Other methods are knitting, crocheting, felting and braiding or plaiting.
- Wood Carving - A form of woodworking by means of a cutting tool (knife) in one hand or a chisel by two hands or with one hand on a chisel and one hand on a mallet, resulting in a wooden figure or in the sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object.
