Learn About Father's Day
Father’s Day this year is Sunday June 16, 2024, and Fathers Day 2025 will be on Sunday June 15. Did you know that the United States has more than 70 million fathers?
The nation's first event expressly honoring fathers, a Sunday sermon in remembrance of the 362 men who died in the previous December's explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, was held on July 5, 1908, although it was a one-time commemoration rather than an annual holiday. The following year, Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower in Spokane, Washington, attempted to establish an official equivalent to Mother's Day for male parents. She traveled to local churches, the YMCA, business owners, and government officials to get support for her concept, and she was successful: on June 19, 1910, Washington State celebrated the nation's first statewide Father's Day.
On June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington, the nation's first Father's Day was observed. The holiday slowly spread across the country. When President Wilson pressed a button in Washington, D.C. in 1916, he used telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane. President Calvin Coolidge asked state legislatures to recognize Father's Day in 1924. The day celebrating fathers did not become a national holiday in the United States until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day official. Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father's Day a federal holiday in 1972, right in the heart of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign.
Today, the third Sunday in June is observed as Father's Day in the United States. Fathers are celebrated in other nations, particularly in Europe and Latin America, on St. Joseph's Day, a traditional Catholic celebration that falls on March 19.
Economists estimate that Americans spend nearly $20 billion on Father's Day presents each year, with the average American spending approximately $200 on Gifts for Father’s Day.
